Explore the North Devon beaches and South West coast path

We are situated close to the South West Coast path, perfect for walkers to explore Clovelly to the South and Peppercombe to the North. If you wish to enjoy a fabulous view over Bideford Bay and beyond, just turn left out of the entrance gate and then first right along the lane/footpath. Walk straight ahead until you reach a gate across the footpath then enjoy the glorious view. On a clear day you can see right across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Nearer to, the white walls of the Saunton Sands Hotel are clearly visible across the Torridge/Taw estuary.

Bucks Mills lies between Clovelly and Peppercombe on the coast. The nearest town is Bideford. We are within easy reach of Barnstaple and the beautiful beaches to the north of Barnstaple. We are also within easy reach of North Cornwall’s fabulous beaches. A day trip to Tintagel, Boscastle or Padstow is easily do-able. Day trips to Lundy Island leave from Bideford or Ilfracombe several times a week depending on the tides.

Beaches

Depending on whether you are looking for family friendly sandy beaches or unspoilt rocky beaches with rock pools, waterfalls and an abundance of marine life, there is something for everyone nearby.

Bucks Mills, Peppercombe, Mouth Mill Cove, Spekes Mill, Welcombe and Duckpool to name a few, are totally unspoilt. Due to this, they are slightly more difficult to access and may not be suitable for families with very small children but are well worth a visit with (or without) older children.

Westward Ho and Sandymere (about 7 miles away) are the closest sandy beaches. Sandymere, accessed via the village of Northam, is particularly easy for parking, although there are limited facilities for toilets and refreshments. Sandymere is accessed via the Northam Burrows which is home to many different varieties of wildlife, birds and rare plants. The Visitor Centre is open during summer months and during school holidays there are various activities for children. There is also a café providing a selection of snacks and drinks and this is open every day apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

For breathtaking scenery, Hartland Quay will not disappoint. A visit to Hartland Abbey and its gardens are also recommended.  Hartland Abbey, its adjoining beach Blackpool Mill, the village of Hartland and the Quay have been the locations for a number of films and television dramas. The Night Manager and a remake of the Daphne Du Maurier thriller ‘Rebecca’ being the most recent.

Further to the north of Devon you will find the vast expanse of Saunton beach, the surfing resort of Croyde and North Devon’s premier beaches of Putsborough and Woolacombe. If you are willing to drive as far as Woolacombe, there is nothing nicer than a visit to Barricane Beach on a warm summer’s evening to enjoy a Sri Lankan curry (served on the beach) as you watch the sun go down.

Drive approximately 10 miles south on the A39 and you will cross the county border into Cornwall. The National Trust beach of Sandymouth is well worth a visit but parking can be difficult on a hot day in the height of the season. Bude is a little further on but as well as great beaches it has a number of leisure facilities and activites for young and old; plus many interesting shops, cafes and restaurants.

Family Activities

The Milky Way and The Big Sheep are close by. Young children (and maybe older ones too) will enjoy the rides and rollercoasters at the Milky Way, animal petting zoo and sheep races at the Big Sheep. There is a leisure centre at Northam and an indoor swimming pool. Soft play and ten pin bowling are two of the activities available at Bude.

Places to eat

Lots of them. The nearest are The Hoops Inn near Horns Cross and the Farmers Arms at Woolsery, both under two miles away. The Hart Inn and Pattard Kitchen (advance booking necessary) in Hartland are worth a visit. Morans in Westward Ho provides fabulous Thai food but also caters for those with more conservative tastes. If you are after a cream tea, the award winning Old Rectory Tea Rooms are at Morwenstow. Whilst there you may like to visit the church made famous by the Rev. Robert Stephen Hawker and a short walk along the coast path will bring you to Hawker’s Hut.

There are countless other places to eat; too many to mention.

Shopping

The nearest shop is located at the crossroads with the A39 about a quarter of a mile away. It is well stocked with many essentials and is also a post office. The nearest Supermarket (Asda) is approximately 6 miles away at Affinity Shopping Village. Affinity is a factory outlet shopping centre and contains a number of well-known retailers.
