Woodpecker Cottage
Highstead, Bucks Cross, Bideford, Devon
We purchased Highstead, together with its outbuildings and gardens in 2015 and love the secluded nature of the property. We also really enjoy the varied wildlife and colourful birds that are resident within the neighboring woods and fields including roe deer, pheasants, stoats, rabbits and of course woodpeckers.
We understand that Highstead was once part of the Walland Cary Estate and that the house (much enlarged now) was tied accommodation for the gamekeeper employed by the Estate. Woodpecker Cottage was originally used as kennels for the Estate dogs. During the last century the Estate was gradually sold in lots to new owners and Highstead became a farm with several fields to the east of the property and was home to sheep and a small herd of cows. When we purchased the property Woodpecker Cottage was used as a an agricultural tool shed and we hoped that we would be able to convert it to a dwelling that could be enjoyed by holiday makers.
We have tried to create a comfortable modern dwelling whilst still retaining some of the rustic charm of the original building. You may wish to light a fire in the woodburning stove on chilly evenings or on warm sunny days enjoy sitting on the patio which enjoys the morning and early afternoon sun.
